Julian Dunkerton's first foray into fashion retail came at just 19, when he used a government-backed enterprise scheme to launch his own clothing business - selling it for a profit within a year. At 20, he founded Cult Clothing, quickly growing it to around £20 million in turnover. In 2003, Julian co-founded Superdry, which went on to become one of Britain's most phenomenal global success stories, reaching a peak market cap of £1.7 billion. He stepped down as Chief Executive in 2015, returned to the business in April 2019, and was appointed permanent CEO in December 2020.
Under Julian's leadership, Superdry has undergone a period of major transformation: taking the business back into private ownership in 2025, returning it to profitability in FY25, and completing a full rebrand to Superdry&Co the same year. Today, the business operates over 120 owned stores globally, alongside 140+ franchise and licence stores across 30 countries.
Beyond fashion, Julian is an active philanthropist and investor in his hometown of Cheltenham, with ventures spanning boutique hotels, hospitality, and community regeneration projects that reflect his commitment to British creativity and local enterprise.
